Color in the spandrels (decorative panels above/below each window) enhance the tower's vertical lines.
Majestic in the Gothic details.
A closeup shows that much of the terra cotta is repaired, replaced or missing. The roof was originally gilded.
One World Trade Center rises to the west.
It's getting crowded: Construction cranes on One World Trade Center intrude. By 2014, an 80-story hotel/residential tower is slated to open directly behind the Woolworth Building.
The three-story limestone base has rich gothic detailing.

Under the south wing, a vaulted arcade shelters an entrance to the subway.
The "Civic Fame" statue is gilded copper sheets over an iron frame - like the Statue of Liberty, minus the gilding.
