[Beekman Tower Hotel] G_1443 [9/10/2012 10:27:56 AM] IMG_3053_resize.jpg Circular "temple" dominates the corner plaza. IMG_5935_resize.jpg The base was originally rusticated white marble. Now used as a residence hall by Pace and the New School. IMG_5941_resize.jpg Don't blame De Lemos & Cordes for the awkward top: A different architect spliced two floors to the original six. The fire escape was not part of the original design. IMG_5907_resize.jpg IMG_5910_resize.jpg IMG_6363_resize.jpg IMG_6366_resize.jpg IMG_6367_resize.jpg Nelson Tower's distinct white crown is visible from throughout the Garment District. IMG_6380_resize.jpg Seventh Avenue main entrance. IMG_6422_resize.jpg IMG_6426_resize.jpg Biograph Studios once had a revolving stage on the roof - it followed the sun for filming. Brick, red granite and terra cotta make up the facade. The original lobby was cut in half to make another store (now occupied by Cohen's Fashion Optical). Roosevelt Building detail. The massive copper mansard roof is easy to spot from a block away. Art Nouveau in the SoHo Cast Iron District. Squat Doric columns seem to bulge under the building's weight. Deeply incised detail in the terra cotta (wonderfully restored!). NEL Co. - New Era Lofts. Pac-Man grafitti challenges a copper lion. Rich terra cotta sixth floor looks almost like carved ivory. IMG_6009_resize.jpg IMG_6010_resize.jpg IMG_6011_resize.jpg IMG_6013_resize.jpg 2014-07-12 12-45-06-0103.jpg : 3194x4653 px IMG_6019_resize.jpg IMG_6023_resize.jpg IMG_6024_resize.jpg IMG_6027_resize.jpg IMG_6028_resize.jpg IMG_6030_resize.jpg IMG_6031_resize.jpg IMG_6032_resize.jpg IMG_6033_resize.jpg IMG_6034_resize.jpg IMG_6036_resize.jpg IMG_6037_resize.jpg IMG_6038_resize.jpg IMG_6040_resize.jpg IMG_6041_resize.jpg IMG_6043_resize.jpg Color in the spandrels (decorative panels above/below each window) enhance the tower's vertical lines. Majestic in the Gothic details. A closeup shows that much of the terra cotta is repaired, replaced or missing. The roof was originally gilded. One World Trade Center rises to the west. It's getting crowded: Construction cranes on One World Trade Center intrude. By 2014, an 80-story hotel/residential tower is slated to open directly behind the Woolworth Building. The three-story limestone base has rich gothic detailing. Above the main entrance. Above the main entrance. Four heads repeat around the Barclay Street, Broadway and Park Place facades. IMG_5883_resize.jpg Detail from entryway arch. Detail from entryway arch. "Tourists Are Not Permitted Beyond This Point" The spectacular lobby is also a NYC Landmark. Broadway Chambers Building is designed in the classical base-shaft-capital configuration. The building's crown is of colorful terra cotta. Viewed from the Brooklyn Bridge. The building's base is rusticated (joints emphasized) granite; the brickwork above is patterned to mimic the rustication. A plain modern door replaces the original, and is out of character. IMG_5495_resize.jpg IMG_5603_resize.jpg The bronze storefronts are a 1929 revision. The four monumental statues are by J. Massey Rhind and represent four aspects of commerce, according to the NYC Landmarks Presrvation Commission. Views from the south and east show the Park Row Building's highly irregular shape - and a lack of decoration. IMG_5129_resize.jpg R. H. Robertson used horizontal bands to try to de-emphasize the building's height. The towers were once used as observatories - now they are designated triplex apartments. IMG_5148_resize.jpg IMG_5149_resize.jpg IMG_5152_resize.jpg The balconies are strictly decorative. The narrow Ann Street facade includes a freight entrance. Steel trusses span the light courts. IMG_5236_resize.jpg IMG_5283_resize.jpg The Park Row Construction Company bought the adjoining lots to ensure that no tall buildings would block the Park Row Building's windows. IMG_4505_resize.jpg IMG_4508_resize.jpg IMG_4951_resize.jpg IMG_4952_resize.jpg IMG_4956_resize.jpg IMG_4959_resize.jpg For many years, the elaborate ceiling was covered by a drop-ceiling. The 15-foot ceilings were restored in 2002. Viewed from the New York Public Library. The East 39th Street facade. Radio Wave Building - 49 W27th Street near Sixth Avenue. IMG_3683_resize.jpg IMG_3685_resize.jpg IMG_3686_resize.jpg The entrance is on W31st Street. The upper floors are referred to as "tower floors" in building plans. The Greeley Square Building stands one block south of Greeley Square. Each setback has a slightly corbeled cornice trimmed in limestone. A modest, restrained four-story limestone base. As you approach Park Avenue Tower (which isn't actually on Park Avenue) the crown disappears but the building's complex tapering planes are more evident. View looking up the E55th Street facade. A modest plaza on the East 55th Street side. The planes are so complex, it's difficult to find a true vertical. IMG_4073_resize.jpg IMG_4076_resize.jpg The East 56th Street side has no plaza. IMG_4083_resize.jpg IMG_4084_resize.jpg The bright cobalt conical crown commands attention from blocks away, but can't be seen from across the street. Angled wings on the cylindrical tower reminds one of a sattelite and its solar panels. At street level the color scheme has warmed to blue-green puntuated by gray and near-black polished granite. Small, as plazas go, but still the most generous pedestrian space in the vicinity. Bowed double-height storefronts face Lexington Avenue. IMG_4547_resize.jpg IMG_4551_resize.jpg IMG_4553_resize.jpg A puzzling projection - Greek elements tacked on to a postmodern building. Can't figure out why. IMG_4570_resize.jpg IMG_4575_resize.jpg IMG_9114_resize.jpg One Worldwide Plaza is the 50-story office tower on Eighth Avenue between W49th and W50th Streets - the signature crown can only be seen from afar. Two Worldwide Plaza is the complex's 38-story mid-block residential tower. IMG_4442_resize.jpg Three copper crowns mark Worldwide Plaza's principal structures, which occupy the entire block from Eighth to Ninth Avenue, between W49th and W50th Streets. IMG_4448_resize.jpg IMG_4448-2_resize.jpg IMG_4448vB.jpg Entrance to the seven-story courtyard residential building. The six-screen movie theater was converted to "New World Stages" - an off-Broadway venue. Plaza between the office and condominium towers. The fountain sculpture is "Four Seasons" by Sidney Simon. A driveway from W49th to W50th Street cuts through the plaza. The condominium tower. A plaza-level fitness club is part of the condo amenities. A three-story arcade (patrolled by zealous security!) circles the office tower base. IMG_4463_resize.jpg One Worldwide Plaza's Eighth Avenue facade. On the corner: an iPod Nano-sized clock hugs the wall. One of the E59th Street entries - and garage. The two-story arcade entry is dominated by "brick sculpture" by Alexsandra Kasuba. Within the arcade, an entry to the subway and a diminutive branch of the New York Public Library. IMG_3075_resize.jpg IMG_3078_resize.jpg Notice how well 560 Lexington Avenue blends in with neighbors General Electric Building (to right) and St. Barts church (behind, on E50th Street).
