Tracey Towers are the Bronx's tallest buildings. White concrete floor slabs punctuate the brown-grey concrete block facades. Many apartments have balconies. The tubes themselves have no windows - and are squared off, inside. The style, "brutalism," is named for the French term for raw concrete. Unadorned concrete block facades are stark forms. The building was owned for a while by Pace University. It is now residential, except for ground floor retail space. Two terra cotta angels support the cornice on the Nassau Street facade - helped by lots of iron straps. View down Spruce Street. The four monumental statues are by J. Massey Rhind and represent four aspects of commerce, according to the NYC Landmarks Presrvation Commission. Views from the south and east show the Park Row Building's highly irregular shape - and a lack of decoration. IMG_5129_resize.jpg R. H. Robertson used horizontal bands to try to de-emphasize the building's height. The towers were once used as observatories - now they are designated triplex apartments. IMG_5148_resize.jpg IMG_5149_resize.jpg IMG_5152_resize.jpg The balconies are strictly decorative. The narrow Ann Street facade includes a freight entrance. Steel trusses span the light courts.
